On the 29th of April, The Committee of the Regions and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation organized a conference about the challenges facing implementation of bioeconomy in the regions of the European Union in the context of the knowledge sharing platform.

During the conference, various visions of bioeconomy, investment opportunities and bioeconomy strategies for sustainable growth in the regions were discussed. Speakers from the Lodz Region and the Autonomous Community of Extremadura in Spain presented their examples of good practices and investments in the development of the sectors related to bioeconomy.

Barend Verachtert from the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation highlighted the main bioeconomy’s priorities:

Reducing hunger and malnutrition;

Building a climate and global change resilient primary production system;

Implementing sustainability and circular economy principles across the whole food system;

Boosting innovation and investment, while empowering communities.

Gilles Laroche from the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation listed three main principles:

Preserve and enhance natural capital by controlling finite stocks and balancing renewable resource flows;

Optimize resource yields by circulating products components and materials in use at the highest utility at all times in both technical and biological cycles;

Foster system effectiveness by revealing and designing out negative externalities.

With regard to bioeconomy, Gilles Laroche also stressed following aspects:

We have to invest in bioeconomy;

Favourable policy for bioeconomy;

Address the knowledge gap (make research, increase knowledge, observatory);
